Worldwide chronic wounds affect 140 million people. In the Netherlands the number of people suffering from chronic wounds is 500.000 people.
Chronic wounds have a high impact on quality of life and on 5 year survival rate, which is comparable to that of cancer. In case of diabetic foot ulcers, risk of infection is high and 3% of cases these wounds result in amputations.
On average, non-healing wound typically costs €10.000 per year.
A cold plasma is created by ionizing a gas by means of a strong electric field.
Cold plasma is very effective in killing bacteria, improving blood circulation and stimulating cell proliferation – combining these factors has a strong effect on wound healing process.
All types of chronic wounds can be treated with cold plasma.
Cold plasma is also used to inactivate cancers cells; in dentistry for disinfection, and in dermatology.
A lot of clinical trials, including our own safety trial, have proven that cold plasma is safe, kills bacteria, viruses and fungi, stimulates cell proliferation, and improves blood circulation, thereby facilitates wound healing. Read more about effects of cold plasma here.
The frequency and the number of treatments will depend on the size and the type of the non-healing wound. Typically, the treatment will need several weeks, and will be done daily or 2 to 3 times per week.
The patient will feel no pain. Patients might feel a tingling sensation only.
Cold plasma treatment does not pose any risk for patient. Apart from other studies, this was also proven by our own study conducted at VU Amsterdam on patients with diabetic foot ulcers. The study demonstrated that the cold plasma treatment is safe and well tolerated.
During the study 20 patients with diabetic foot ulcers were treated with cold plasma. The wounds of these patients had existed on average for 1090 days. More than half of the wounds reduced by over 75% in size during the two weeks of treatment, two wounds (10%) healed completely! The study demonstrated that plasma treatment in diabetic foot ulcers heals wounds, is safe and well tolerated.
The product is not on the market yet. At this moment it is only used for clinical studies.
